Protection for property owners when police use their land

If police send vehicles, walkers, or bikers onto your property during an emergency or accident, you and your successors are not legally responsible for accidental harm or damage caused by that use. This protection only applies when police direct traffic onto your land as allowed by law.

The statute, as written — Owner's immunities

In the event the chief of police diverts vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, or a combination thereof, onto an owner's real property during an emergency or traffic accident, the owner, together with the owner's successors in interest, if any, shall not be civilly liable for negligently causing the death of, or injury to, any person or damage to any personal property, in connection with the use of the real property for the purposes as provided in section 135-2.
