HRS §287-16

License suspension for unpaid judgment and exceptions

If a court judgment against you for a car accident is not paid, the state will suspend your driver's license. You can keep your license if the person you owe agrees in writing and you show proof of financial responsibility. This agreement can last six months and may be renewed until it is revoked in writing.

The statute, as written — Suspension for nonpayment of judgment; exceptions

The administrator, upon the receipt of a certified copy of the judgment shall forthwith suspend the license of any person against whom such judgment was rendered, except as hereinafter otherwise provided in this section and in section 287-19. If the judgment creditor consents in writing, in such form as the administrator may prescribe, that the judgment debtor be allowed a license, the same may be allowed by the administrator, in the administrator's discretion, for six months from the date of the consent and thereafter until the consent is revoked in writing, notwithstanding default in the payment of the judgment, or of any installments thereof prescribed in section 287-19, provided the judgment debtor furnished proof of financial responsibility.
