HRS §431:10E-101
You must have a financial stake to insure property
This law says that an insurance policy on property is only valid for people who have an insurable interest in that property. An insurable interest means you have a real, legal financial stake in keeping the property safe from loss or damage. If you don't have that interest, you can't enforce the insurance contract.

The statute, as written — Insurable interest in property required
No contract of insurance on property or of any interest therein or arising therefrom shall be enforceable except for the benefit of persons having an insurable interest in the property insured. Insurable interest means any lawful and substantial economic interest in the safety or preservation of the subject of the insurance free from loss, destruction, or pecuniary damage.
