When you are responsible for a check or note

This section says you are only responsible for paying a check or promissory note if you signed it yourself, or if someone you authorized signed it for you and that signature legally binds you. It does not cover other ways of becoming liable.

The statute, as written — Signature necessary for liability on instrument

A person shall not be liable on an instrument unless (i) the person signed the instrument, or (ii) the person is represented by an agent or representative who signed the instrument and the signature is binding on the represented person under section 490:3-402.
