What a separation decree lets each spouse do

A separation decree makes each spouse legally independent, like an unmarried person. They can sue or be sued, buy or sell property, make contracts, and do other legal acts on their own. This section only covers the effect of the decree, not other separation rules.

Every decree of separation shall have the effect of allowing each of the spouses to sue or be sued, to alienate and convey property, to make contracts, and to do all other acts as if the spouse were an unmarried person.
