Settling claims against the state
The attorney general can negotiate and settle claims against the state. If a settlement is $25,000 or less, it is paid from a state fund. If it is more than $25,000, the legislature must approve the money first.

(a) The attorney general may arbitrate, compromise, or settle any claim cognizable under this chapter. (b) Claims arbitrated, compromised, or settled by the attorney general for an amount not exceeding $25,000, shall be paid from the state risk management revolving fund. Claims arbitrated, compromised, or settled by the attorney general for more than $25,000 shall be paid only after funds are appropriated by the legislature for the payment of those claims.
