Extra fee for vehicle registration to fund safe routes to school

Counties must add a $5 fee to each vehicle registration to pay for safe routes to school. The county finance director must tell the state transportation department in writing at least 90 days before starting. The money goes into a special fund for the program.

(a) In addition to any other fees required by law, each county shall impose and collect a $5 surcharge on every motor vehicle registration issued under section 249-31 or 249-31.5, no later than December 31, 2025. (b) The director of finance shall notify the department of transportation in writing of the county's intended start date at least ninety days before implementing this section. (c) The surcharge shall be deposited into the safe routes to school program special fund established under section 291C-4.
