When an unclaimed towed vehicle can be treated as abandoned

If a county rule lets police or another agency tow and store cars, a car that is not claimed within 24 hours by its owner can be considered abandoned. Then the county can get rid of it using the rules for abandoned vehicles.

The statute, as written — Disposition of unclaimed vehicle

Whenever a county ordinance authorizes the police or other agency designated by the mayor of the county to remove and store vehicles, a vehicle removed and stored under authority of such ordinance may be deemed to have been abandoned for the purposes of this chapter if not claimed within twenty-four hours by a person entitled to possession. Such vehicle may be disposed of in accordance with this chapter for the disposition of abandoned vehicles.
