Choosing your own insurance for a loan

If a lender makes you buy credit life or disability insurance for a loan, they must tell you in writing that you can use insurance you already have or buy it from any licensed insurer in Hawaii. This section only requires that notice.

The statute, as written — Existing insurance and choice of insurer

When credit life insurance or credit disability insurance is required as additional security for any indebtedness, the creditor shall give the debtor written notice of the debtor's option to furnish the required insurance through existing policies of insurance owned or controlled by the debtor or of procuring and furnishing the required coverage through any insurer authorized to transact an insurance business in this State.
