License required to get a repair lien or sue

If you are required to have a license under this chapter, you cannot get a lien for your work or materials, or sue on a repair contract, unless you were licensed when you did the work. This section protects consumers by limiting legal remedies for unlicensed repairers.

The statute, as written — License condition precedent to lien

No person required to be licensed under this chapter shall have the benefit of any lien for labor or materials or the right to sue on a contract for motor vehicle repairs done by the person unless the person was licensed at the time the person performed the contract.
