Temporary permits for out-of-state elevator mechanics

The board can give a temporary permit to an elevator mechanic from another state if that state's standards are similar to Hawaii's and the mechanic has skills or training not available here. The board will set the permit rules. The board cannot register such a person as an apprentice.

The statute, as written — Temporary permit

The board may issue a temporary permit to any person who has qualified as an elevator mechanic in another state with standards substantially equal to those of this chapter and who possesses skills or training not available in the State; provided that the board shall not register any such person as an apprentice elevator mechanic. The board shall, by rules and regulations, establish the terms of the temporary permit.
