Returning stolen or lost property to its owner

If the police have your stolen or lost property, they must give it back to you or your authorized agent when you prove you own it. You must pay the reasonable costs the police spent to keep the property safe.

Any stolen or lost property in the custody of a police officer shall be delivered to its owner or the owner's duly authorized agent upon satisfactory proof of ownership, and if to an agent, of the agency; subject to payment by the owner or agent of all reasonable expenses incurred in the preservation and safekeeping of the property.
