Waiting period before sterilization can happen

After a judge allows sterilization, the order cannot take effect right away. The court must pause the order until the time to appeal has passed. This gives someone a chance to challenge the decision.

The statute, as written — Appeals

Upon entry of the decree the court shall stay the effect of a decision allowing sterilization until the expiration of time within which to file an appeal pursuant to the Hawaii Rules of Civil Procedure.
