Prosecutor's office can hire investigators with police powers

This section creates the prosecuting attorney's office and lets the prosecutor hire deputy prosecutors, staff, and investigators. Investigators get police powers, but must follow training rules and have certain qualifications. Police handle any investigation when an investigator fires a gun.

There shall be an office of the prosecuting attorney as provided by Charter. The prosecuting attorney may appoint deputy prosecuting attorneys and necessary staff, including investigators. The investigators shall have all of the powers and privileges of a police officer for the County of Hawai‘i. The office of the prosecuting attorney shall adopt policies and standards for training and use of these powers consistent and in conformance with those adopted by the Hawai‘i County police department. All investigations relating to the discharge of a firearm by an investigator shall be conducted by the Hawai‘i County police department.
