Parking distance from curb and use of shoulder

This section tells drivers how to park on roads with curbs and on roads without curbs. If there is a curb, park parallel and within 12 inches of it, or in a marked stall. If there is no curb, park parallel to the road with all wheels off the traveled part, using the shoulder if possible.

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this chapter: (1) Every vehicle stopped or parked upon a roadway where there are adjacent curbs shall be so stopped or parked with the wheels of the vehicle parallel to and within twelve inches of the curb or wholly within a marked parking stall and headed in the direction of authorized movement. (2) Every vehicle stopped or parked upon a highway where there are no curbs, shall be so stopped or parked parallel with the roadway and with all wheels entirely off the traveled way so far as the shoulder width will permit and headed in the direction of authorized movement.
