Rear license plate must be lit so it can be read

Your car must have a light that shines on the rear license plate. The light must make the plate easy to read from 50 feet behind the car. This applies to any vehicle with a rear plate.

Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate and render it clearly legible from a distance of fifty feet to the rear.
