Emergency vehicle flashing light requirements

This section sets the minimum flashing light equipment for emergency vehicles. Most emergency vehicles need a red light visible from the front. Police use blue, and civil defense vehicles use red but with a shorter visibility distance.

(a) Every authorized emergency vehicle except police vehicles and authorized civil defense emergency vehicles shall be equipped with at least one flashing red light visible to the front of the vehicle for a distance of five hundred feet in normal sunlight. (b) Police vehicles shall be equipped with at least one flashing blue light visible to the front of the vehicle for a distance of five hundred feet in normal sunlight. (c) Authorized civil defense emergency vehicles shall be equipped with at least one flashing red light visible to the front of the vehicle for a distance of three hundred feet in normal sunlight.
