Homeowner Electrical Repairs

This rule says you cannot do electrical or plumbing work that breaks state licensing laws. A homeowner may personally repair their own home's electrical lines (except service meters) if the materials cost under $1,000 and they follow state rules. No permit is needed for that. All electrical work must meet the county code.

It shall be unlawful for any person to perform any work covered by this Code in violation of those provisions of the Hawai'i Revised Statutes relating to the licensing of electricians and plumbers. A homeowner may do repairs (except to service equipment metering), involving retail material cost of less than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) to his or her own home electrical lines and appurtenances personally, provided the homeowner complies to provisions of Chapter 448E HRS. In such cases, a permit shall not be required.No person shall do or cause to be done any electrical work which does not comply with the provisions of this Code. No person shall perform any work covered by this Code in violation of the provisions of Chapters 444 and 448E, HRS.
