Private sewage systems in flood zones need state approval

Individual private sewage disposal systems or treatment facilities may be permitted in a special flood hazard area when design and location of such systems are approved by the Department of Health, State of Hawai'i. In addition to the Administrative Rules, Department of Health, State of Hawai'i, all such new and replacement sewage disposal systems shall be designed to minimize or eliminate infiltration of flood waters into the systems and discharges from the systems into flood waters.
