When vehicle lights must be on

This section explains that the following rules about vehicle lights apply to the types of vehicles listed in those rules. Vehicles on any highway must have the required lights on from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. However, clearance and side marker lights can be off if there is enough light to see people and vehicles 500 feet away.

The sections immediately following relating to clearance and marker lamps, reflectors, and stop lights shall apply as stated in those sections to vehicles of the type therein enumerated, and vehicles, when operated upon any highway, shall be equipped as required and all lamp equipment required shall be lighted from thirty (30) minutes after sunset until thirty (30) minutes before sunrise, except that clearance and side marker lamps need not be lighted on any vehicles when operated in the County of Kaua'i where there is sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons and vehicles on the highway at a distance of five hundred (500) feet.
