Rules for loads sticking out of vehicles

This section sets safety rules for loads that stick out from a vehicle. If a load extends far past the rear, you must mark it with a red flag or light. Passenger cars have limits on how far loads can stick out sideways, and surfboards with blades must be covered and tied down.

Whenever the load on any vehicle shall extend more than four (4) feet beyond the rear of the bed or body thereof, there shall be displayed at the end of the load in a position as to be clearly visible at all times from the rear of the vehicle a red flag not less than twelve (12) inches both in length and width, except that between thirty (30) minutes after sunset and thirty (30) minutes before sunrise there shall be displayed at the end of the load a red light, visible under normal atmospheric conditions at least five hundred (500) feet from the rear of the vehicle.No passenger-type vehicle shall be operated on any highway with any load carried thereon extending beyond the line of the fenders on the left side of the vehicle or extending more than six (6) inches beyond the line of the fenders on the right side thereof.No surfboard with a projecting blade shall be carried on a vehicle in such a manner unless the blade is covered or other effective protective measure is taken and unless the surfboard is securely fastened to the vehicle.
