Pretreating wastewater before it enters the sewer system

If the County Engineer says your wastewater needs treatment before going into the sewer, you must build and maintain the required equipment at your own cost. The equipment must be approved, accessible for cleaning, and you must keep records of how you dispose of captured waste. You cannot use certain chemicals or methods in grease traps.

Where preliminary treatment is deemed necessary by the County Engineer to render any water or wastes acceptable for discharge into the sewage works, suitable preliminary treatment facilities shall be provided by the owner and maintained continuously in satisfactory and effective operation at his or her own expense. Grease, oil, sand and dirt interceptors, screening devices, facilities for pH adjustment, and other preliminary treatment facilities shall be of a type and capacity as approved by the County Engineer.When pre-treatment standards, as promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for specific industrial classes, are more stringent than the acceptable limits under this Chapter, EPA standards shall be adhered to by the County.All pre-treatment facilities shall be located as to be readily accessible for cleaning and inspection. In maintaining these facilities, the owner shall be responsible for the proper removal and disposal by appropriate means of the captured material and shall maintain records of the dates, amounts, and means of disposal which are subject to review by the County Engineer. The use of enzymes, bacterial cultures, degreasers, hot water, or steam in the grease interceptor is strictly prohibited.When required by the County Engineer, the owner of any property served by a building sewer requiring preliminary treatment facilities shall install a suitable control manhole in the building sewer to facilitate observation, sampling and measurement of waste. Such manhole shall be constructed in accordance with plans approved by the County Engineer. The manhole shall be installed and maintained by the owner at his or her expense.
