Rules for paying off special taxes early

The County Council can decide if you may pay off special taxes early, and can set rules like when you can't pay early or if you must pay extra. If you pay early under those rules, the Finance Director prepares a cancellation notice you can file with the land records office. A fee may be charged for that notice.

The Council may prohibit the prepayment of special taxes or specify conditions under which special taxes may be prepaid and permanently satisfied. The conditions may include periods during which prepayment shall not be permitted or a requirement that a premium be paid upon prepayment.If the Council has specified conditions under which special taxes may be prepaid and permanently satisfied and if the special taxes are so prepaid and permanently satisfied as to a particular parcel of land, the Director of Finance shall prepare a notice of cancellation of the special taxes for the parcel. The Director of Finance shall transmit a copy of the notice to the owner, who may file it with the Bureau of Conveyances or Land Court. The Director of Finance may charge a reasonable fee for preparation of the notice.
