Turning an abandoned driveway into a sidewalk

When a driveway is no longer used, the property owner must tear it up, fix the curb, and build a sidewalk that matches the ones next to it. If the owner doesn't do this within six months, the county will send a notice, and the owner has twenty days to get a permit. If they still don't finish, they face penalties.

A. Upon the abandonment of any driveway or any proposed driveway, the owner shall close, raze, and grade to the typical cross-section the abandoned driveway or proposed driveway, replace the curb and convert the area between the curb and the property line into a sidewalk which shall be so finished to conform to the type of sidewalk adjacent to it. B. If the owner fails to close an abandoned driveway and to convert it into a sidewalk within six months, the director shall notify the owner and if such owner fails to obtain a permit to convert the abandoned driveway into a sidewalk within twenty days from the date of such notice or, having obtained a permit, fails to convert such driveway into a sidewalk before the expiration of such permit, the owner shall be penalized as provided in section 12.08.200 .
