Rules for guard posts around tanks

This section sets the exact building rules for guard posts placed near tanks. The posts must be made of steel, filled with concrete, and set at certain distances from each other and from the tank. Bigger tanks or tanks that dispense fuel need the posts placed farther away.

Subsection 60.5.1.9.2 of the NFPA 1, as amended by the State Fire Code, is amended to read as follows: 60.5.1.9.2 Where guard posts are installed, the posts must meet the following criteria: 1. They must be constructed of steel not less than four inches (102 mm) in diameter and concrete filled. 2. They must be spaced not more than three feet between posts on center. 3. They must be set not less than three feet (0.9 m) deep in a concrete footing of at least 15 inches (381 mm) diameter. 4. They must be set with the top of the posts at least three feet (0.9 m) above ground. 5. They must be located at least three feet (914 mm) from the tank. Tanks of 500 gallons capacity or more or tanks used for dispensing purposes must have guard posts located at least five feet from the tank. ( Ord. No. 5754 , § 3, 2024)
