How long a hearing can last and what happens after

This section sets time limits for a hearing about proposed changes. The hearing must finish within 30 days, but can be extended up to 6 months if needed. At the end, the council can either drop the matter or approve the ordinance, but cannot include parts that were successfully protested.

The hearing may be continued from time to time, but shall be completed within thirty days; except that, if the council finds that the complexity of the proposed changes or the need for public participation requires additional time, the hearing may be continued from time to time for a period not to exceed six months. At the conclusion of the hearing, the council may abandon the proceedings or, after considering all protests and such other relevant factors (such as the general plan or development plan) as it deems appropriate, may approve the ordinance of consideration (in the form in which it was introduced or with such changes as determined by council). The approved ordinance shall not contain provisions successfully protested in accordance with section 3.75.440 . ( Ord. No. 4947 , § 1, 2018)
