Definitions of Pole Trailer, Semi-Trailer, and Trailer

This section defines three types of towed vehicles for the traffic rules. A pole trailer carries long loads like pipes. A semi-trailer rests part of its weight on the towing vehicle. A trailer carries people or property without resting weight on the towing vehicle.

For the purposes of this chapter, the following definitions apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning. Pole Trailer. Every vehicle without motive power designed to be drawn by another vehicle and attached to the towing vehicle by means of a reach, or pole, or by being boomed or otherwise secured to the towing vehicle, and ordinarily used for transporting long or irregularly shaped loads, such as pipes, poles, or structural members capable, generally, of sustaining themselves as beams between the supporting connections. Semi-Trailer. Every vehicle with or without motive power, other than a pole trailer, designed for carrying persons or property and for being drawn by a motor vehicle, and so constructed that some part of its weight including that of its load rests upon or is carried by another vehicle. Every vehicle with or without motive power, other than a pole trailer, drawn or designed to be drawn by a motor vehicle and designed to carry persons or property, and so constructed that no appreciable part of its weight rests upon the towing vehicle. )
